Basham, J. D., Perry, E., & Meyer, H. (2011). It's in the bag. Learning and Leading with Technology, 39(2), 24-27. Retrieved from http://www.learningandleading-digital.com/learning_leading/20110910?pg=26&pm=2&fs=1

Summary:
After reading "It's In The Bag" from Learning and Leading with Technology a specfic sentence stood out to me, "Learners need to understand the content and complete the learning experience." This statement has a very strong impact on me. Personally I feel that is the purpose of every assignment given by a teacher in hopes that their students will have learned a new tool and be able to incorporate it into their daily life. The idea of a digital back-pack is very interesting. I like that it can be used as a tool for teachers to collaboratively store different learning tools. Teachers are able to provide templates for students to help them with their learning experience. Providing different curriculum to meet every individual students needs and learning styles makes it easier for a teacher to incorporate technology into the curriculum. Digital Backpacks are not just about using technology in place of a book, it’s actually a different way of teaching.

Question #1: Why would teachers want to use a digital backpack?

With a digital backpack student can look up information online and conduct research. They are also able to Use standard tools such as dictionaries, calculators, sound recorders, etc. all in one place. Students can then organize notes, assignments, and projects into folders on a computer. They will also be able to use video conferencing or view videos with media rich information. Students will like the fact that they can send assignments from anywhere with internet access. It is easy for teachers to then grade assignments and for students to check and keep record of their grades.

Question #2: My question is for you! What complications, in your experience come from using a digital backpack?

A possible complication when using a digital back pack is the problem with not being able to access the internet. Although if a student uses the excuse that they do not have internet access at home it can be justified by the teacher that all public libraries have free internet access.
